On Tuesday 24th of June, the first ever official meeting of the Glasgow Universities Curling Clubs Presidents and Vice-Presidents was held to discuss how to approach various matters regarding the coming season.

In attendance were Ross McIsaac (P) and Scott Gibson (VP) from Strathclyde University Curling Club, Fiona Telfer (P) from UWS Curling Club, and Alasdair Schreiber (P) and Jim Whittle (VP) from Glasgow University Curling Club. Also at the meeting was Stuart Taylor who is the current president of SSS Curling and Andrew Ballantyne, a former Strathclyde curler.

The meeting discussed various matters regarding ice bookings and sheet numbers for next season, the various fresher’s events taking place, GUCC’s ‘Come and Try’ event being organised in conjunction with GUSA, the price of ice, current training location and sponsorship bars.

With regards to SSS competitions, the league and the various clubs’ entries were discussed. Glasgow and Strathclyde are both putting two teams into the league. UWS is yet to confirm.

The ‘Ashes’ tournament was also discussed at length, with two competitions decided to be held: a one match affair between Glasgow and Strathclyde played yearly for the ‘ashes’ of Alasdair’s broom handle, and a league running through the year for the ‘stump’ of the top of the handle played for by mixed teams.

Further meetings are likely throughout the summer to finalise details and plan things fully. The complete minutes of the meeting will be available in due course.

The GUCC committee will also be liaising with GUSA to organise a large scale ‘Come and Try’ event next season. We’ll be looking for coaches!
