2015 AGM Held

The Glasgow University Curling Club held its Annual General Meeting on Monday 16th March at the Grosvenor Café on Ashton Lane. The meeting gave a chance for the committee to report on the successes of the club this season and congratulate members on a spectacularly successful season so far. It also gave the club an opportunity to look ahead to the final two competitions of the season, namely the Taxis Cup and Stranraer.

The Taxis Cup is the biggest Intervarsity event in Scotland, a multi-sport competition between the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde and the Glasgow Caledonian University, and is currently going into its eleventh year. Glasgow was fighting to retain the cup for the fifth year in a row!

There are currently 17 core sports in the Glasgow Cup, from football, to fencing, from rugby to equestrian. However, for the first time in the history of the competition, curling will be appearing as an exhibition sport. This means that the competition will be organised wholly by the three competing clubs and, should it be a success, may be invited to take part as a core sport next year.

Glasgow’s team of Alasdair Schreiber, Ben Fowler, Peter Dagen and Rebecca Steven will be looking to continue this season’s success into this exciting event!

We also look to the SSS Open in Stranraer, the final competition of the year, where Glasgow will hope to repeat its success from last year and clinch the top-spot again. This year, Glasgow will be sending three teams, its biggest ever contingent for this event!

The AGM was also a chance to elect new members to the committee of the club. We said goodbye to a number of familiar faces, with the whole of the executive committee stepping down this year due to their time at University coming to an end.

Alasdair, Rebecca and Jim, who have been actively involved with the club since starting at Glasgow, have represented the club to an impeccable standard, both competitively and administratively, and have worked to put the club in its strongest position yet.

The new committee who are stepping up will no doubt to an excellent job and function as superb ambassadors for the Club, the University and for the sport of curling.

The Committee Changes are as follows:

Other issues such as the changing of sponsor bars and a proposed joint sponsor with Strathclyde were discussed. The meeting concluded with a dinner at the Grosvenor Café and drinks at the President Elect’s flat.

All-round, the AGM was a great evening and a fantastic social night out for many of the club's members.

Full minutes of the AGM will be posted on the Documents section of the website in due course.
